European Electrotechnical Standardization Committee (CENELEC), a rating system has been developed to determine the resistance of electrical or mechanical devices to dust, water or external impacts. IP protection ratings allow manufacturers to produce within a certain standard, while providing consumers with more detailed information about the product offered.

These values detailed below, IP Protection Rating or International Protection Assessment. The tests to detect this situation are called IP tests.

IP tests it has three different perspectives:

  • Resistance to solid objects and materials
  • Resistance to liquids
  • Resistance to mechanical factors

However, the resistance to mechanical factors is often underestimated.

The resistance values to solids and materials are 7:

  • 0 = No protection
  • 1 = Protection against solid objects longer than 50 mm
  • 2 = Protected against solid objects longer than 12 mm
  • 3 = Protected against solid objects longer than 2,5 mm
  • 4 = Protected against solid objects longer than 1 mm
  • 5 = Dustproof
  • 6 = Dustproof

The resistance to liquids is 11:

  • 0 = No protection
  • 1 = Protected against vertical drops of water
  • 2 = Protected against vertical drops of water at an angle of 15
  • 3 = Protected against vertical drops of water at an angle of 60
  • 4 = Splash-proof
  • 5 = Protected against low pressure water
  • 6 = Protected against high pressure water
  • 6K = Protected against increased pressure water
  • 7 = Temporary immersion protection
  • 8 = Continuous immersion protection
  • 9 = Protected against high temperature water

The mechanical resistance values are 7:

  • 0 = No protection
  • 1 = Impact energy 0,225 joules
  • 2 = Impact energy 0,375 joules
  • 3 = Impact energy 0,5 joules
  • 4 = Impact energy 2 joules
  • 5 = Impact energy 6 joules
  • 6 = Impact energy 20 joules

IP protection values are expressed in 2 numbers. The first figure indicates the resistance of the product to solids and materials, and the second figure indicates the resistance of the product to liquids. This is shown as the third number if the product's resistance to mechanical influences is to be shown.

For example, if it is stated on any product that the product has an IP 67 license, it means that this product is fully dustproof. Furthermore, the product is not affected if immersed in 15 cm to 1 m and removed.
